| Teaching is an integral component of nursing practice; you do it everyday,
whether it's teaching a patient about her or his illness or providing colleagues
with an update from a conference you just attended. In addition to the almost
daily teaching of patients and families, nurses also teach in continuing
education programs, colleges and universities, and as part of their "other
duties as assigned" (a frequent addendum in job descriptions).
For many of us, teaching one-to-one comes easily and naturally, but stand
us in front of a classroom and we begin to stammer and sweat. We know
the subject matter; we just don't necessarily know how to impart it to
others. We may know how to teach, but our own anxiety level gets in the
way.
Think back to those teachers or presenters that you have personally found
interesting and informative. How did they do it? What teaching method
did they use? What presentation skills did they have that you found to
be conducive to your learning?
Regardless of what your specific job title in nursing is, it is likely
that you will be doing some teaching as part of your work and as part
of professional activities, such as involvement in professional and specialty
nursing organizations.
This course will provide useful information regarding teaching. It can
be applied to both formal and informal teaching settings, teaching just
one person or family, or teaching a lecture hall full of colleagues.
